Nutrition for fertility: building your baby’s first home

Trying for a baby can be a magical time for a couple, if everything goes smoothly.

Things can get tricky when nothing happens for 6 months or longer. You probably didn’t speak about trying to conceive with many people because you wanted to surprise them after the first trimester milestone. You may feel a little isolated, not sure who to talk to and have a million questions and worries flooding your mind. It’s not uncommon to feel a bit discouraged too.

You may have been lucky enough to conceive, but perhaps had an early miscarriage and have been grieving the loss of your little one. You are ready to give it another try but are worried that it might happen again. You wish you had some answers as to why this happened, and all your unanswered questions are adding to your worries.

Who do you talk to and what can you do to get yourself and your body ready to create a life?

Understanding infertility

The miracle of life truly is a miracle: so many things need slot into place at the right time for a baby to be conceived, that sometimes your body and mind might struggle to help you start a family.

 Problems with ovulation, including polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) and poor-quality semen from your partner are two of the most common causes of infertility.

NHS figures also suggest that one in four cases of infertility are due to an unknown cause. This means that all possible tests have been performed and all came back fine. Doctors cannot answer the ‘Why?” question.

In-vitro fertilisation (IVF) may be your only option.

Or is it?

Nutrition and lifestyle changes paired with a careful selection of nutritional supplements can help 80% of couples to conceive naturally, as shown by a study conducted by the University of Surrey. In comparison, the success rate for IVF is around 25%.

Worth considering, isn’t it!

Nutrition for building blocks and hormonal balance

Healthy nutrition and lifestyle help you store the solid building blocks to create a life, but you knew that already. What you may not know is that a personalised Nutrition and Lifestyle Plan can help to re-balance your hormones.

Hormonal imbalances can be the root cause of your inability to conceive and can be aggravated by many factors. Do you and/or your partner:

  • Have sugar cravings;
  • Sleep less than 7 hours per night;
  • Rarely eat oily fish;
  • Skip your five-a-day;
  • Have more than one caffeine-containing drink a day;
  • Smoke;
  • Consume more than 14 units of alcohol per week?

Any of the above can impair your ability to start a family. It is time to build a home ready to welcome your baby. Now that you know, what are you going to do about it?
